Title: Trail of Trees

Learner Outcomes:
· Students will be able to identify trees based on their leaves and bark.
· Students will be able to write a script and take photos for a digital story.
· Students will be able to use software to edit and produce a digital story.
· Students will be able to add music and voice-overs to a digital story.
· Students improve their physical fitness by walking the HHS fitness trail.
Duration of Lesson: 11-12 Class Periods
Materials: Tree Identification Books, Camera,
Technology Tools/Courseware: Computer, Internet, Word, Corel Video Software, Microphone, C Map Software, Vimeo.com
Teacher Notes:
- No safety or health factors beyond care in walking on fitness trail.
- There are no special requirements.
- The setting is the classroom and school grounds.
Procedures:
Lesson One:
Day One
· Introduce unit and assess prior knowledge using C Map software to produce a concept map of the Key Terms.
· Show Session One of Forestry and Rail classes.

Day Two
· Students start to walk the HHS Fitness Trail photographing and identifying the trees that line the trail.
· Students continue to walk the Fitness Trail photographing and identifying trees.
· Students continue to walk the Fitness Trail photographing and identifying trees.
Day Three
· Students classify trees as coniferous or deciduous.
· Students update their C Maps from Day One to improve the relationship among Key Terms.
Day Four
· Introduce students to digital story video format by playing 2-3 examples.
· Introduce students to Corel Video editing software.
Day Five
· Students add photos to Corel photograph library to be used in digital story.
· Students start moving photographs into Corel Timeline.
Day 6
· Students continue adding photos to the timeline
· Students begin writing script for voice over narration.
Day 7
· Students continue writing script and recording voice overs on their stories.
Day 8
· Students continue writing script and recording voice overs.
· Students search Freemusic.com for background music for digital story.
Day 9
· Students continue adding music to their digital stories.
· Students prepare final version of their digital stories.
Day 10
· Students critique each other’s stories.
· Students revise and finalize their videos.
Day 11
· Students play the final version of their videos for the class.
· Students upload their videos to Vimeo.com.
Day 12
· Students prepare the final version of their C Map concept maps.
Modifications: Each lesson will be modified to comply with individual education plans.
Enrichment Activities: Students may add more types of trees to their stories and/or add videos to their digital story.
Evaluation/Assessment: Formative assessment will be by concept map and by checklist.
Summative assessment will be by rubric for the digital story.
Summative assessment will be by quiz.
