 Cabell County Forestry & Rail Class - Lesson Three

Title: Railroad Ride Across Country

Grade level(s):  9

Subjects: Math, Reading and Language Arts, and Social Studies.

Learner Outcomes:   Students will:
·         Be able to research a topic using internet search engines and collect information for analysis.
·         Students will be able to read a map to ride a train and get from point A to point B.
·         Students will be able to calculate the costs of taking a trip by train.

 Duration of Lesson: 3 - 50 minute class periods.

Materials: Computer, Printer, Map of Train Routes, Calculator, Pencil and Paper, Colored Pencils

Technology Tools/Courseware: Internet    

Teacher Notes:
  • There is no safety concern beyond normal.
  • There are no special requirements.
  • The setting is the classroom and school grounds.

Procedures:
            Day 1
·         Introduce unit and assess prior knowledge by discussing trains and focus mostly on Huntington’s depot, CSX.
·         Use guided internet research to find information to define the Key Terms.

            Day 2
·         Students research a railroad/train map of destinations to stop across the county (United States of America). They will also need to make sure they look at prices for each stop.
·         Students will print off the map of where they want to arrive. They will use a colored pencil to trace the path they wish to take.
Day 3
·         Students will calculate how much money they will need for travels, food, and luggage.
·         Students will present to the class what trip they wished to take, what railroad they traveled, and also how much money they needed.

Modifications:  Each lesson will be modified to comply with individual education plans (IEPs).

Enrichment Activities:  Students will may have more stops on their train rides but they will have to calculate how much money they will have to have.

Evaluation/Assessment: 
·         Formative assessment is by checklist noting progress on their projects.
·         Summative assessment is the final presentation graded upon what is required.
